Reading at Haslucks Green Junior School
How is Reading Taught in Our School?
Reading is at the heart of our literacy curriculum. All of our literacy units are text based - using a range of carefully selected core texts, as well as links to supplementary books, to immerse pupils in a holistic reading experience.
Phonics:
We follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds - a systematic synthetic approach to phonics teaching.
Guided Fluency:
Pupils have regular Guided Fluency sessions in school to develop their skills towards becoming experienced readers, ensuring that they become proficient in fluidity, automaticity, speed and expression.
Comprehension:
Developing comprehension skills is embedded in our approach to teaching reading at Haslucks Green School. We use VIPERS as a tool for teaching comprehension.

The Home School Partnership:
We follow a structured reading scheme via our Collins Big Cat reading books. Children use a reading diary to record home reading and these are closely monitored.

Developing Passionate Readers at Haslucks Green:
At Haslucks Green, we are fortunate enough to have a dedicated library space in school which pupils have regular access to and is managed by our Head Librarian Ms Hands and her team of librarians.
Our daily story time also offers an opportunity for children to listen to their teacher read a longer text to them. Below is a link to the reading spines followed by each year group.
